Part IV of SEO Choosing Keywords Because most search engines utilize the Keyword META Tag, it is very important to choose words that are being used by more than just yourself to define your company.
Tools: Wordtracker has a synonym function that creates a list of related words to the one you’re interested in using. A list is generated with multiple related keywords and the list tells how many hits this word gets per month and how many are anticipated in the upcoming month. As well, Wordtracker lets you know how many other web sites are using this keyword; therefore, how many other web sites you’re competing against in search engine rankings for the top spot or, at the very least, the first page of search results. Because all search engines and directories rank web sites differently, it’s good to take the Wordtracker list and compare that to internal keyword data found at Google Adwords, Overture Keyword Tool, among others. Many of the common and general keywords (i.e., cancer) are used by a greater number of web sites, which means more competition for the top spot on the list or placement on the search engine’s first page. Therefore, it’s better to use very specific keywords to direct targeted traffic to your web site. These keywords should be used in the Keyword META tags, as well as in the body copy of the web pages.
